More Info
– Road Condition
The majority of northern Vietnam’s landscape consists of mountain ranges, tropical forests, remote hillsides, and valleys with sparse populations. Hill tribes are common in small towns and cities in the northwest and far north near the Laos and Chinese borders. Due to the peak mountain ranges, slopes, deep valleys, and sparse population, gravel roads and dirt tracks are the primary means of transportation for locals, and many roads are closed to traffic. Minor and high roads are less trafficked, and mountain biking tours in northern Vietnam can be on-road and off-road, with fewer off-roads in rural districts where rural roads can be unsafe and dangerous.
– Weather
The climate in Hanoi and northern Vietnam is characterized by two distinct seasons: winter and summer. The winter season, which is primarily dry, lasts from November to April and is characterized by temperatures ranging from 17-22°C, with the coldest months being December to February. The summer season, on the other hand, is hot and humid and lasts from May to October, with the highest rainfall occurring between May and August.
The rainy season in the Northeast region of Vietnam typically occurs from May to August, with low humidity and heat marking the end of the season. In the Far North region, the rainy season runs from June to August, and the cold winter season spans from December to February.
The agriculture in the North West and Far North Vietnam relies on the wet season, especially for the growth of rice crops on terraces. These crops require a lot of water for their development. The annual rice crop in these regions is typically a single crop and starts after the first rainy month, allowing the soil to become more suitable for seeding. Depending on the location, such as high or low terraces, and the amount of water available from rainfall or streams, the seeding of the rice plants may occur at different times, ranging from two weeks or more.
The best time to explore North West & Far North Vietnam is during the harvest season, which runs from early September to late October. This is a great time for travellers to witness the stunning and colorful rice terraced fields, lush country farms, green rainforests, waterfalls, and vast vegetation. During this season, travellers can also interact with the hill tribes who live in the area and learn about their farming practices and way of life. It is recommended to avoid travelling during the beginning of the wet season, which can be too rainy and not ideal for exploring the region.
